A colleague said something to me recently that meant a great deal. He told me how much he enjoyed working with me, how much better the environment felt than where he had been before, and that he viewed me as a strong and inspirational leader.
I appreciated that more than he probably realized. Because the older I get, the more I think leadership is measured less by control and more by climate.
People remember whether your presence brought clarity or tension. Whether your standards were steady or selective. Whether your leadership made them feel sharper, safer, and more capable—or smaller, guarded, and drained.
Titles matter less than tone. Authority matters less than consistency. And leadership is often felt long before it is formally recognized.
A good environment does not happen by accident. It is built through respect, accountability, calm, and the daily choice to lead without making everything about yourself.
That kind of leadership may not always be loud. But it lasts. The best leaders do not just direct the work. They shape the room.
