The Rainbow Bridge

For the past several months, I’ve been sharing lessons on leadership, resilience, and perseverance from an unlikely source—my 5-pound cat, Charlotte.

Last week, Charlotte crossed the rainbow bridge.

I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on what she taught me—not in theory, but in how she lived every single day.

Charlotte came into my life in 2019 as a foster with serious health issues. She needed surgery just to have a chance at a normal life. Most would have seen a fragile animal with a long road ahead. What I saw—and what she proved—was something entirely different.

Strength doesn’t always look the way we expect.

Over the past year, Charlotte faced more than most would think possible—surgeries, complications, a feeding tube, medications, treatments, and ultimately cancer. And yet, she never stopped being herself.

She still looked out the window. She still came over to sit with me. She still tried to eat on her own, even when it was difficult. She still attempted to groom herself, even when she needed help.

She didn’t complain. She didn’t withdraw. She didn’t give up. She just kept showing up.

In business, we talk a lot about resilience. We use the word often—sometimes too casually. But Charlotte defined it in a way that’s hard to ignore: Resilience isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about continuing forward—quietly, consistently—even when the path isn’t easy.

She also reinforced something I think we overlook, especially in leadership: Dignity matters. No matter what she was going through, there was a quiet dignity in how she carried herself. No drama. No self-pity. Just presence.

That’s something I’ll carry with me—in business and in life.

I don’t know that I’ll ever fully process the loss, but I do know this: Charlotte’s impact didn’t end with her life.

It lives on in the way I show up. In the way I handle adversity. In the standards I hold myself to.

Going forward, I’ll be thinking in terms of a simple question: Am I meeting the Charlotte standard?

Rest easy, sweet girl. You fought harder than anyone I’ve ever seen.
